The lack of advanced upgrading equipment and technologies has limited the expansion of heavy oil and bitumen production. Delayed Coking and Hydrotreating These major ground handling methods are capital intensive and may cost more than the cost of reservoir engineering facilities. Through thermal cracking and associated reaction conversion, the THAI Horizontal Segment Air Injection technique can be used to directly reform the heavy oil in a reservoir because it can be flooded with horizontal wells for short distances, a mechanism similar to SAGD. This article discusses the results of a three-dimensional combustion chamber experiment with Wolf Lake heavy oil. When the combustion front just reached the horizontal well, the upgrading started. The kinematic viscosity of the produced oil decreased significantly from 80 000 cSt to 50 cSt (average); the corresponding severity increased from 10.1 ° API to 20.4 ° API (average). A series of expert analyzes were conducted on the quality of the produced oil, including total acid number (TAN), bromine number, SARA (saturated hydrocarbons, aromatics, gums and asphaltenes), produced water and gas analysis. Petrobank Energy Resources’ Whitesands Institu heavy oil division conducted its first THAI pilot field test at Christina Lake in Alberta, Canada. The pilot project was launched in 2006 and if successful, the new THAI technology will revolutionize the recovery and smelting of heavy oil.
