Methods A total of 106 children with iron deficiency anemia received from May 2010 to May 2012 in Pediatrics and Pediatrics of our hospital were selected as the study group, while 106 healthy children in the same period were selected as the control group. The children’s height, weight, mental development and common cold, diarrhea and other common diseases were compared between the two groups. Results There was no significant difference in height and weight between the two groups. The intelligence development of children in study group was significantly worse than that of control group. The incidence of common diseases in study group was significantly higher than that in control group. Conclusions Iron deficiency anemia can cause mental retardation in children and increase the risk of common diseases such as cold and diarrhea. Clinic should increase the screening of the disease and rectify it as soon as possible to ensure the normal growth and development of children.
