“耐”字如今是承受得起、经受得住的意思,比如耐烦、耐寒、耐用、忍耐等等。但它在古代是一种刑罚——“剃须”的意思。以上那些词语只不过是它的引申义罢了。“耐”是一个会意字,从“而”从“寸”。要想了解“耐”字,还得从“而”字说起。“而”现在是一个连词,有时也作代词或副词用,但这些都是“而”的假借义,在古代,“而”的本义是“胡须”的意思。我们认真看一下,“而”还真有点胡须的样子。在甲骨文中,“而”是一个象形字,向下垂的四条线像胡须之形。戴震注《周礼》
