The “foundation - superstructure” model is an important issue for contemporary Marxism in reconstructing historical materialism. Allen Wood believes that the development and deformation of this model are constantly misinterpreted process, the distortion of the problem is bound in the fixed frame and terminology. Thompson tried to break the shackles, criticized the textbook system and Althusser’s structuralism, and expounded metaphorical insights of great value. On the basis of drawing lessons from Thompson’s insights, Ellen Wood emphasizes that foundation and superstructure are not rigid separations. They are a continuum and an organic link. This reconstruction not only reaffirmed the original intent of historical materialism, but also opened a new space for the critique of capitalism.
