如今，越来越多的外国朋友对汉语逐步产生浓厚兴趣。有人甚至涉猎中国的古典文学作品，如美国汉学家艾愷早在20世纪60年代，就初涉到浩瀚无边的古汉语。中国是一个崇尚“缘分”的社会，因而“缘分”二字在古典文学作品里信手拈来。那么，如何用英文来翻译“缘分”二字呢？本文主要介绍运用三个英语单词来翻译处理古典文学作品里的“缘分”二字，以飨中外读者。
一、luck（y）译
luck主要有“运气，幸运”等意思。如：There was a woman who was beautiful， who started with all the advantages， yet she had no luck. 曾经有这样一位美丽的妇人，各种有利条件齐集一身，然而却说不上是命运的宠儿。请看luck（y）译如何处理“缘分”二字。例如：
1） 做甚么了便没？只恨我夫妻缘分上薄，自不撞着！ （出处：元末明初文学家施耐庵的《水浒》All Men Are Brothers） Who says there isn’t？ It’s just that my marriage luck has been bad. I’ve never met the right one.
2）她无缘，小生薄命。 （出处：元代杂剧作家王实甫的《西厢记》）。She lacks the karma; I’m out of luck.
3）只为缘悭分浅，遇不着一个知己，所以对月伤怀，临风洒泪！（出处：清代小说家吴敬梓的《儒林外史》The Scholars） But I have not been lucky enough to find a true friend， and that is why I so often give way to melancholy！

二、fate译
fate主要有“命运”等意思。如：By a strange twist of fate， Andy and I were on the same plane for Cairo， the capital city of Egypt. 由于命运的奇特安排，我和安迪乘坐了同一架飞机飞往埃及首都开罗。请看fate译如何处理“缘分”二字。例如：
1）富贵功名，前缘分定。（出处：明代小说家吴承恩《西游记》） Wealth and honor， glory and fame， are predetermined by fate.
2）一则是天缘，二来是‘情人眼里出西施’。（出处：清代小说家曹雪芹的《红楼梦》） It’s partly fate， and partly a case of “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”
3）更使襟灵憎市井，足知缘分在云山。（出处：北宋文学家吕南公的《奉答顾言见寄新句》） The mind dislikes the marketplace even more and it’s enough to know that fate lies in Yunshan.
三、destiny译
destiny主要有“命运;天命”等意思。如：I believe there’s some force guiding us --- call it belief， destiny or fate. 我总认为有某种力量在引导着我们---叫它信仰也罢，天意也罢，还是命运也罢。请欣赏destiny译如何处理“缘分”二字。例如：
1） 备分浅缘薄，不能与先生相聚。（出处：元末明初小说家罗贯中所著《三国演义》） My meagre lot， my partly destiny keep us from remaining together.
2）君琴瑟之好，自相知音;薄命人乌有此福。如有缘，再世可相聚耳。（出处：清代文学家蒲松龄的《聊斋·宦娘》） You are like a matching lute and zither set. You can appreciate each other’s music. Fate has been too unkind to allow me such blessings. If we are linked by the ties of destiny， we will meet again in the next life.
除用以上三个英语单词英译“缘分”之外，有人还用honour和lot等词翻译与处理过《三国演义》里的“缘分”和“无缘”等字眼。例如：
1） 备久慕先生，无缘拜会。Your talents and your virtue have ever been the objects of my esteem. But I have not had the honour of being presented to you.
2） 备分浅缘薄，不能与先生相聚。My meagre lot， my partly destiny keep us from remaining together.
