1938年至1942年,自由主义知识分子胡适以学者身份出任驻美大使,开展战时外交。与职业外交家不同,胡适凭借自己的人格、声望、信誉,积极展开外交活动,任上在全美各地向不同阶层的美国公众宣传抗战,发表大量演讲,且常从文化路径切入,阐述中国传统文化中的现代性因素,力图使美国公众同情、了解并最终支持中国抗战。研究胡适驻美任上抗战宣传,对于进一步认识胡适思想、理清国民政府战时中美关系和开展跨文化交流,颇有助益。
From 1938 to 1942, liberal intellectual Hu Shih acted as scholar in the position of ambassador to the United States to carry out wartime diplomacy.
