Luciano Zoccoli (1869-1929), a modern Italian writer whose main works are “The Death of Orpheus,” “Trickery,” “Shooting the Arrow,” “Beautiful Life,” and “Sin And temptation ”and so on. One of his excellent short stories, the “Happy Guy” chosen here, is one of the best short stories in modern Italy. The author places infinite sympathy on the poor people who become criminals in capitalist society, but scoffs at the pious elites of the bourgeoisie. By describing the trial of a group of criminals in court, the novel shows all kinds of Italian society at the beginning of this century, making us feel like being in a social environment at that time. In the author’s writings, both the innocent and pure girl in the working class, the fierce-tempered judge, or the hypocritical man of all fronts are all very vivid and colorful, each with a distinctive personality. The whole structure of the story is also very complete, after reading gives a strong artistic appeal.
