To observe the efficacy of metformin in patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM), 98 patients with 2-DM treated between December 1996 and June 1999 were treated with metformin and metmex, respectively. The results are reported as follows . Materials and Methods: 98 cases of newly diagnosed 2-DM patients were diagnosed according to the WHO diagnostic criteria. The course of disease ranged from 2 to 42 months. The body mass index (BMI) was 26.8 ± 2.1 (21.3 ~ 32.1)
