现在,读书的人越来越少了。不少人家里有名牌电视,高档家具,惟独没有书柜;有的有书柜且装满了贵书,但那只是摆设而已。不仅一般老百姓很少读书,就是所谓读书人,现在也不大读书了。这种不爱读书的情况,在戏曲艺术界也严重存在。当今不少戏曲艺术工作者,本来文化艺术水平就不高,却一不刻苦练功,二不认真读书。当今的戏曲艺术工作者,光学艺,不读书,难成大器,更难以创造出适应新时代新观众的新戏曲。以人为鉴,可以知得失;以史为鉴可以知兴替。一部中国戏曲发展史,明白无误地告诉我们:没有“书”的涵养,就没有“戏”的辉煌。
