中国的改革开放到了一个关键时期。政治、思想、文化领域的现代化进程,正逐渐适应历史发展的要求。以复旧、封闭、保守为要义的文化民族主义便登台亮相,来安慰和鼓励那些面对世界进步的大势而感到自卑与恐惧的人,他们否定文化(包括戏剧艺术)有高下、文野、新旧、先进与落后之分,拒绝承认人类在文化(包括戏剧艺术)上有共同与共通的东西,对一百多年来中国现代化进程中文化上的种种进步视而不见。他们又被当前价值观念变化中出现的种种复杂现象吓破了胆,这种文化民族主义在戏剧领域也有强烈表现,它顽强地对抗着中国戏剧现代化的进程。
