《中国翻译》1990年第3期载张庆路同志文,对To be or not to be的解释提出一些看法,对此我提供一些情况供参考。张很强调莎剧中此行句末的冒号,认为上句和下文紧密相连,并应有同样的顺序,即to be=to suffer; not to be=to take arms,是一种排比。其实,莎剧里的冒号不是本来有的,在古本里这里只是逗号。后人编辑,改了冒号,也有人改作分号;还有人在that前加了破折号。莎士比亚本人不关心标点,他对此也不负责任。因此标点是不作为凭的。
China Translation, No. 3, 1990, contains Comrade Zhang Qingluo’s article, and gives some opinions on the explanation of To be or not to be. I will provide some information for reference. Zhang emphasizes the colon at the end of this line of Shakespeare, believing that the above sentence is closely connected with the following, and should be in the same order: to be = to suffer; not to be = to take arms. In fact, Shakespeare’s colon is not what it was, but here it’s just a comma. Later editors, changed the colon, some people changed to semicolon; others added a dash before that. Shakespeare himself does not care about punctuation and he is not responsible either. Therefore, punctuation is not as proof.
