太极拳以阴阳对立统一为总则。其表现形式多种多样:如动与静、虚与实、开与合(含与展)、刚与柔、曲与直、起与落(提与放、升与降)、屈与伸、轻与重、呼与吸、蓄与发(收与放)、进与退、顺与逆、内与外、意与形、快与慢、前与后、上与下、左与右、竖与横、松与紧、正与隅、单与双、粘与走、化与打、急与缓、攻与守、显与藏、始与终、吞与吐、仰与俯等。这些无一不是阴与阳的关系。这些矛盾的对立统一,组成了太极拳的每个套路,推动着每个套路的发展、完成。
