晚清首任驻日公使何如璋是一位爱国官员,也是中国历史上最早派驻外国的公使之一。在任期间,为琉球问题同日本政府坚决斗争,为朝鲜开国积极地筹谋划策,为修改不平等条约向清政府大声呼吁。归国后,他努力经营福建船政局,并为马江之战积极筹防。遗憾的是,长期以来国内外竟没有一本关于他的传记著作,致使这位在日本史学著作中有所记载的中国历史人物,在国内反而少人知晓,更不用说传闻谬误了。十分庆幸的是,时值何如璋逝世100周年之际,一部质量较高的学术著作填补了这一空白,这就是苏州大学历史系俞政副教授的《何如璋传》(1991年由南京大学出版社出版)。该书具有以下特点:
He Ruzhang, the first minister in Japan in the late Qing Dynasty, was a patriotic official and one of the earliest foreign ministers in Chinese history. During his term of office, he persisted in resolutely fighting the Ryukyu issue with the Japanese government, actively planning for the founding of the DPRK, and appealing loudly to the Qing government for amending the unequal treaties. After returning home, he worked hard to manage the Fujian Provincial Bureau of Shipping and actively prepared for the battle of Ma Jiang. Regrettably, there has been no biography of him at home and abroad for a long time. As a result, the Chinese historical figure recorded in Japanese historical works has been known to a lesser extent in the country, let alone rumors fallacious. It is fortunate that a time when the value of the 100th anniversary of the death of He Ruzhang, a higher quality academic work to fill this gap, which is Associate Professor of History of Suzhou University, “How Ruzhang Biography” (1991 by Nanjing University Publishing House).
