Poem is an excellent way of using language to express feelings. Love is an eternal theme in poem. As readers, we are often deeply touched by it.
With the rise of bourgeoisie, the sphere of culture was influenced and underwent a great change. William Shakespeare was deeply affected by Renaissance. He is a real humanist. Most of Shakespeare’s sonnets display criticism on feudal aesthetics, passionately describe emancipation of human nature and pursuit for truth, kindness and beauty. Shakespeare’s sonnets exhibit minute description on human inner world. The love for his lover revealed in Shakespeare’s sonnets veritably expresses human beings’ pursuit for love in real life. This kind of direct expression at that time in literature works showed the writer’s bravery, which displayed Shakespeare’s advocacy of humanism. Shakespeare’s sonnet 18 is a piece of excellent love poem. The writer compares his beloved person to a comfortable and lovely summer’s day. And then he says his lover is lovelier than a summer’s day. Love during Renaissance is an honorable thing, pure, sincere and full of passion.
Romanticists often focus on human beings’ spiritual and emotional life. In their works, they usually like to use personification. They look the nature as the symbol of beauty, life and ideal situation. They obtain unexpected creative inspiration from the beautiful scenery, come to realize the true meaning of life, see through the essence of life and reveal the eternal truth. In William Wordsworth’s She Dwelt Among The Untrodden Ways, he uses “untrodden way” and “spring of dove” to symbolize the unstained virginity and purity of the girl. The poet compares the girl to a “violet” and “star”, which shows that the girl’s death has different meaning to the poet. A lonely country girl lives a solitary existence in her boudoir. In the eyes of the world, she is only an insignificant little flower. But to the poet, she is a shinning star. The poet sings the praises of the simplicity and purity of the country girl, and also emphasizes the harmony between humanity and nature. Meanwhile, the poet is seeking and longing for a kind of simple and pure love. Wordsworth is good at searching and revealing the feeling of common people. The themes of many of his poems are drawn from rural life and his characters belong to the lower classes in the English countryside. His poems are full of sympathy towards the poor and the humble.
From Romanticism poets’ poems, multivariate and extensive love can be felt. Most of Robert Burns’s poems straightforwardly express love in his heart by simple words. In My Heart’s In The Highlands, the poet directly uses “my heart in the highlands wherever I go” and “the hills of highlands forever I love” to show his deep love for his hometown. In A Red, Red Rose, He applies red rose to show the enthusiasm of love, melody to the tenderness and sweet of love. He uses “the seas gang dry” and “the rocks melt with the sun” to display loyalty and permanence of love.
