郭汉城先生在20世纪50年代就现代戏提出了“坚决继承,大胆创造”的观点;20世纪八、九十年代展开系列探讨和系统论述;21世纪初,得出了“戏曲现代戏趋于成熟”的结论,并将其发展历程分为三个阶段。他认为,戏曲现代化进程已从戏曲改革时期进入戏曲建设时期,并初步建构了现代戏理论框架,使其现代戏理论呈现出严谨而朴实、与现代戏创作实践相结合以及民族化的三大品格。
