Elderly medication Some special issues need to be considered. The physiological changes that accompany aging seem to make the elderly more sensitive to the side effects of the drug. Such side effects can interfere with daily life, increase hospital stays and increase medical costs. A compound that is orally administered must first be absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract and then be transported by the bloodstream to the site of action. With age, intestinal blood flow decreases, the number of cells to be equally reduced, and thus the absorption area also decreases. All of these effects can delay or reduce drug absorption. The reduction of gastric acid secretion may alter the solubility of some drugs to complicate the issue.
