水压式升船机是垂直升船机中比较古老的型式之一,其运转原理是双线承船厢通过水压力自相平衡。两承船厢分别联结在一根(或数根)粗大的压力活塞上,活塞伸入灌满水的密封井中,井内水压作用于活塞底面,支承承船厢的全部重量。水压式升船机必需建成双线。对应密封井之间设连通管,用特制的阀门控制,保证两个密封井内水的流通和转递压力。由于井内水的压力很大(已建单根活塞杆最大为50个大气压),井壁必需用有足够抗压强度的材料衬砌。井口上要有良好的密封装置,使其能保证活塞杆在运转和静止时密封井都不漏水。启动承船厢只需将上游的承船厢内增
