历史传说土耳其梵猫是来自遥远中东条件恶劣、气候变化多端地区的自然猫种。它因其奇特、与众不同的图案而出名。英文中“Van”这个单词已经成为一个术语,用来描述有脑袋和尾巴有斑纹的白猫。土耳其梵猫被发现的时间并不长,1955年,英国的几位爱猫人士在土耳其梵湖畔游览,偶然发现一只会游泳的猫,他们觉得非常奇怪。在人们的印象中,猫是不喜水的动物,而这只猫咪却在水中快乐地游泳。这些人认为这是一个新的突变猫种,开始对这种猫研究起来,经过有计划地选育,到1969年,英国养猫协会正式承认土耳其梵猫为一新品种,20世纪70年代传入美国,现在,土耳其梵猫已经受到全世界爱猫人士的钟爱。
