In the 50 years since independence, Malaysia has undergone tremendous changes in society as a whole in its development and modernization. In the process of nation-building, the active participation of women has affected all walks of life and also brought about gender issues. It also attracted many scholars, researchers and even policy makers to comment on these issues in their research and writings. This article attempts to discuss the study of gender topics from 1980 to 2010. Almost all universities have teachers, graduate students and doctoral students working on gender studies. However, since the 1990s, gender studies have focused on issues ranging from gender equality and diversity to transgender issues. Through the National Women’s Policy, the emphasis on gender research is designed to be innovative in the formulation of policies and plans and in the implementation of projects. Gender research is increasingly demonstrating its importance not only to make a constructive contribution to national policies, especially those in development programs, but also to the country.
