我们熟悉的杜鹃通常是粉红或白色系的,而颜色华贵的黄杜鹃就少有人见了。因为黄杜鹃多还处在野生状态中,而且数量稀少。黄杜鹃又叫映山黄、羊踟蹰,为杜鹃花科羊踯躅亚属落叶灌木,是我国野生杜鹃中最具观赏和开发价值的稀有种,主要分布于长江流域。株高1～2米,老枝棕褐色,全株被灰色茸毛,叶纸质,矩圆形或矩圆状倒披针形,常簇生枝端,伞形总状花序顶生,着花6～15朵,花叶同放,花冠为金黄色,有红色或淡绿色斑点,花期3～5月,果期9～10月,蒴果长椭圆形。本亚属全世界约25种,我国只此一种。
