Objective: To explore a minimally invasive and efficient method of inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia. Methods: 206 outpatients with mandibular impacted third molars were randomly divided into two groups. 105 cases in experimental group were treated by modified Gow-Gates method and 101 cases in control group by traditional oral injection (Halstead method). The success rate of anesthesia, anesthesia effects and complications were recorded. The data were analyzed by SPSS 17.0 software package. Results: The modified Gow-Gates anesthesia success rate was 97.15%, Halstead method was 89.10%, significant difference between the two groups (P = 0.038). The modified Gow-Gates method showed no significant difference between the two groups in the anesthetic effects of Grade A and B at 90.48% and Halstead’s at 87.13% (P = 0.446). The complication of modified Gow-Gates was significantly less than that of Halstead (P = 0.014). Conclusion: GowGates inferior alveolar nerve block anesthesia is a minimally invasive and efficient method of anesthesia.
