The reliability of a building, in addition to its requirements for stability, also plays a decisive role in building fire protection. In West Germany, an average of 150,000 fires occur each year, and the death toll is 800. Most of them die from smoking-induced fires (such as smoking cigarettes to sleep), and 10% of them cause a fire. Table 1 is based on the statistics of the Cologne Property Insurance Company, the economic losses over the years caused by fire, including currency devaluation and other factors. In the past ten years, the amount of damage caused by fire damage in West Germany was 2 per cent of gross national product, and there were almost no fire accidents or deaths and injuries.
