On the first day of my sixth grade, I saw one little girl called Amy on the school bus. “Don’t talk to her,” said Lauren, who sat beside me, “or they will make fun of you.” Amy had many physical differences—lots of reasons for other kids to make fun of her. Her eyes weren’t straight. Her glasses were too big. And she had really ugly teeth.
Every day as we drove to and from school, kids would insult Amy, “God, what a strange face! Stop looking at me!”
I had to be in silence. After all, I didn’t want them to treat me in the same way.
But while I was insulting her, my heart ached for the girl. I could see that she was so ashamed and lonely. Then I wanted to stand up for her. I just didn’t know how to stop my schoolmates until the night of our class skating party.
Our whole class was there. Amy was there, too. Amy didn’t know how to skate, but I could see how much she wanted to have fun like the rest of us. So I skated over to her and took her by the hand. She just smiled, and was very excited.
The next morning there was much news about Amy and me skating together. But nobody laughed at her or me. And they didn’t for the rest of the year. I never heard from Amy after the school year. But I’ve always hoped that I changed her life for the better.

If you look into the sky at night, you may see something moving and shining that you have never seen before. It might be a comet (彗星).
A comet sometimes looks like a star. Like a planet, a comet has no light of its own. It shines from the sunlight it reflects(反射). Like the earth, a comet goes round the sun, but on a much longer path than the earth travels.
Some scientists think that a large part of a comet is water frozen into pieces of ice. This is mixed with iron and rock dust and perhaps a few big pieces of rock. When the sun melts (融化) the ice in the comet, great clouds, together with the dust, forms a long tail. Many people have seen a comet. However, no one knows how many comets there are. There may be millions of comets, but only a few come close enough to the earth for us to be able to see them. Even then it’s not often that a comet comes close enough to be seen without a telescope (望远镜). An English man named Edmund Halley, who lived from 1656 to 1742, found out a lot about the paths that comets take through the sky. Some comets never come back. Others keep coming back at regular intervals (有规律的间隔). A big comet that keeps returning was named after Halley because he was the one who worked out when it would come back again.
Some people saw Halley’s Comet in 1910. Maybe you have ever seen Halley’s Comet because the last time it came close to the sun and the earth was in 1986. If not, you will probably be able to see Halley’s Comet when it comes near the earth again.

39. When will you maybe be able to see Halley’s Comet?
A. In 2018. B. In 2056.
C. In 2062. D. In 2090.
40. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Halley’s Comet won’t return.
B. Halley died in the 17th century.
C. Not many comets can be seen by people.
D. Halley discovered all the paths that comets take.

Dear Disney,
Last weekend, the four members of my family spent an enjoyable holiday at the Magic Kingdom-Disneyland. And one event made our visit seem truly magical.
We got to the front of the line at Space Mountain, only to find out that our little daughter, Gloria, couldn’t take her ice-cream on the ride.
Gloria broke into tears and we all had no idea what to do. Then Murphy, one of the staff (员工) members, came over. She bent down and told Gloria that she would hold the ice-cream for her and give it to her when she finished the ride. Gloria said, “Promise?” Then she gave Murphy her ice-cream, and she completely enjoyed the ride.
Sure enough, as we walked out the exit, there was Gloria’s new friend with “her” ice-cream. Now you and I both know what happened, because we know that an ice-cream won’t last twenty minutes on a summer afternoon in Florida. Murphy knew what time we would get off the ride; she went to the nearest shop and bought a brand-new ice-cream thirty seconds before we walked out the exit. Gloria said, “ Thank you,” but I’m sure she thought it was the same ice-cream. We know that someone tried hard to make our visit special. Thanks so much for going above and beyond!

Each nation has many good people who help to take care of others. For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages (孤儿院) or homes for the aged. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.
Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair their houses, do their shopping or mow their lawns. For boys who no longer have fathers there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or learn crafts (技艺). Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places of interest.
Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they are young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls.
