In order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the demand for solar cells in major European markets has rapidly risen. Major Japanese manufacturers, which account for about 50% of the global solar cell market, have announced substantial increases in production capacity recently. Sharp, the world’s largest maker of solar cells, said recently that it plans to increase its production capacity by 20% this month. Kyocera, which ranks third in the world in production scale, also announced recently that it will invest 40 billion to 50 billion yen (about 116 yen and 1 U.S. dollar) to expand its production capacity and double its production capacity by fiscal year 2010. Sanyo Electric also said it will spend 40 billion yen to increase its production capacity in Japan and overseas plants. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is the establishment of the solar cell production capacity to the current 3 times the principle. (P)
