日本工业技术院地质调查所研制出一种能对一万米深海海底地质构造进行调查的地震勘探装置。这是一种在海面附近发出大爆破音而在深海底直接捕捉由海底地层反射的声波的技术。与以往在海面附近捕捉反射声的方法相比,它进一步提高了地质图象的解象力。1986年9月份将装载在海洋调查船“白岭丸”上进行深海海底勘探的实验,以确定其实用价值。据说该装置也将有助于地震预报的研究等。地震勘探装置是探索地层重叠情况等地质构造所不可缺少的手段。将发生爆破音的气枪和捕捉反射音的接收器置于10米左右深的水中,并用船拖拽进行连续调查的技术也广泛用
