In the Darling River basin in the middle and eastern part of Australia, flooding in 1988 was monitored using the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) images of meteorological satellites. During the observation period, the flood boundary at night was more obvious than during the day. Floods in central Australia are characterized by slow movements of their forefront and slowing down of the catchment into the ocean. During the observation, cloud cover is less and the temperature difference between the flood and the surrounding ground is relatively large. Therefore, it is appropriate to monitor this type of flood by using AVHRR images. Although the resolution of the AVHRR image is 1 km, it is feasible to monitor the flooding area.
