A new study by a team led by the U.S. epidemiologist Dr. Rachel Whitmer found that antidiabetic drug metformin, in addition to its hypoglycemic activity, may have neuroprotective effects on the brain and reduce the risk of dementia. Background to this study shows that people with type 2 diabetes have a 2-fold greater risk of dementia than those without diabetes. However, few researchers have explored the role of antidiabetic drugs in preventing dementia. To this end, Whitmer's team reviewed nearly 15,000 patients with type 2 diabetes who received monotherapy for 5 years. Before treatment, these patients are already elderly patients, some people even have a history of 10 years, aged 55 or above, and have not been used for any
