红铜炉的古事今生手炉的起源,相传产生于隋代。隋炀帝南巡到江苏江都,时值深秋,天气寒冷。江都县官许伍为拍皇帝的马屁,叫铜匠做了一只小铜炉,放进火炭,献给炀帝取暖。炀帝十分高兴,捧在手上,便称之为“手炉”。还有一种说法是手炉起源于道士。据王三聘《古今事物考》中说:“今道士执手炉则不执简。”由此推论,冬天暖手的小炉可能是从道士僧人的法器中演变而来的。到了明清时期,手炉大为流行,直至民国晚期衰落。
