Objective To investigate the effects of mild hypothermia on the function of vascular endothelial cells including endothelin (ET), nitric oxide (NO) and von Willebrand factor (vWF) in patients with moderate and severe cerebral infarction. Methods Sixty patients were randomly divided into mild hypothermia group (n = 30) and control group (n = 30). The mild hypothermia group was treated with mild hypothermia on the basis of routine drug therapy while the control group was given only conventional drug therapy. Before and after treatment, both groups were scored by Chinese stroke scale (CSS). At the same time, the levels of ET, nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and vWF in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid Test. Results After treatment, the levels of ET and vWF in the mild hypothermia group were significantly lower than those before treatment and the control group (P <0.05 or 0.01), while the content of NOS in the mild hypothermia group was significantly higher than that before treatment and in the control group (P <0.05) CSS scores in the hypothermia group were also significantly lower than those in the control group (P <0.01). Conclusion Mild hypothermia can protect endothelial cells and promote the recovery of brain function in patients with moderate and severe cerebral infarction.
