程晋芳在《文木先生传》里说,吴敬梓“仿唐人小说为《儒林外史》五十卷,穷极文士情态,人争传写之”①。的确,读《儒林外史》可以明显感受到其中有不少人物形迹或故事情节源自唐人小说。但这些内容一经吴敬梓再创造后融入《儒林外史》的文本与时代语境,就具有了与原来的人物形迹及故事情节不同的意义。具体而言,唐人传奇在题材选择上以爱情、豪侠、隐逸为中心,这种选择体现出传奇作家们追求“无关大体”的浪漫人生的情怀。②《儒林外史》
