Radioimmunoassay was used to determine the somatostatin and neurotensin levels in 14 normal term newborns and their mothers. The levels of somatostatin and neurotensin in umbilical artery were significantly higher than those in umbilical vein (all P <0 .01), both of which were significantly higher than those of corresponding maternal venous blood after delivery (P <0.01). There was a negative correlation between umbilical arterial pH and somatostatin and neuronal concentration of umbilical artery (P <0.01). Suggesting that high concentrations of somatostatin and neurotensin in cord blood are likely to be fetal and may be related to fetal stress due to childbirth.
