Objective: To compare the annual detection rate and influencing factors of metabolic syndrome (MS) among faculty members in a university in Beijing in 2006 and 2008. Methods: Using a predetermined epidemiological questionnaire, a professional asked about the past history of the population, measuring height, weight, waist circumference, blood pressure, and body mass index (BMI) values. All patients with type 2 diabetes were randomized to oral 75g glucose tolerance test (OGTT), fasting and 2h after loading blood glucose, blood insulin, fasting blood lipids, uric acid, liver and kidney function and other indicators. Two years were calculated MS detection rate. Results: According to the diagnostic criteria of CDS and IDF, the detection rates of MS in 2006 were 8.9% and 8.9% respectively, and in 2008 they were 15.1% and 17.4% respectively. The detection rate of MS increased with the increase of age. The detection rates of diabetes, pre-diabetes, hypertension, high triglyceride and / or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, BMI≥25kg / m2, waist circumference abnormalities (male≥90cm, female≥80cm) were 3.5%, 6.6%, 16.6%, 30.3%, 41.5% and 20.6% respectively. In 2008, they were 4.2%, 8.1%, 25.6%, 36.4%, 48.5% and 30.7% respectively, representing a net increase of 20.0%, 22.7% and 54.2% %, 20.1%, 16.9%, 49.0%. Compared with 2006 significantly increased (P <0.01). Conclusion: Faculty members in a university in Beijing have a higher detection rate of metabolic syndrome and its related diseases, and show an increasing trend with the most obvious increase of hypertension and waist circumference.
