The novel “The Bondage of Humanity” is a masterpiece by William Somerset Maugham, a well-known British writer and literary critic in the 20th century. The theme of the novel is a clue to Phillip, a disabled youth. By vivid depicting the rough experience of his ideal, struggle and ultimate failure, he deeply reveals the social outlook and the psychological conditions of people, especially young people. Therefore, it has long been recognized by European and American critics as a realistic masterpiece. The author intends to carry out some deep-seated readings on the theme of the work, hoping to make a useful contribution to deepening the study on the “shackles of human nature.”
