  【Abstract】There is college entrance exam within liberal education. For vocational education, there is professional skill competition. The English speaking competition, which is the unique English contest among national vocational ability competitions, has the effect of guidance and demonstration on vocational English teaching. This essay will start with the analysis about the inspecting point of the speaking competition to core vocational ability, exploring the long-term assistance program of the competition to promote the continuous development of vocational English teaching.

  To deepen the teaching reform of higher vocational English curriculum, display and improve the English oral expression, English writing and other applying abilities of higher vocational students, educational ministry unites the relative departments of state department, sectors and local area to conduct the annual national vocational ability competition. The effect is enormously different, teachers should let students know the principle of detail decides success or failure, these skills and consciousness training needs to be accomplished with a lot of practices.
  1. English applying ability
  Socialization is the final product of linguistic education. ‘The basic English curriculum teaching requirements of higher vocational education’ released by Education Ministry has stipulated that higher vocational education should set fostering high-grade application person as goals. The English ability for higher college students should base on the English language ability which is ‘sufficient and practical’, involving communicative ability by practically applying speaking English, especially the comprehensive English ability to deal with future sector-related business by utilizing English.
  2. Core professional ability
  Core professional ability refers to ‘the basic ability except for work-related professional ability through one’s career life, which is applicable for any sectors and regarded as the lifelong sustainable ability.’ Hence it is called all-purpose vocational ability, key ability, and basic ability. Gaining core professional ability is the key point for comprehensive quality cultivation of vocational talents. There are eight aspects of core professional ability which are communication, information processing, digit application, corporation, problem resolution, creative revolution and foreign language application.   3. Inspection of speaking competition to core professional ability
  National higher vocational practical English speaking competition is consisting of presentation, interview and debate. Presentation requires the contestant to choose a chart which depicts a certain picture of drawings or advertisements, basic on the illustration provided( such as the import and export volume, market change, population change, production situation, production index, spot introduction) to make an oral statement. During interview, contestant should select a question and then make a present conversation with the examiner.
  The training of various imaginary situations is intended to improve students’ strain ability. In addition, the proper use of body language, eye contact in actual communication cannot be ignored. The specific business training requirements in this stage are mainly to learn from the details of each word’s expression. Such as describing a trend as “explosion” or only for the “increase”, “collapse” or “decrease”, the effect is enormously different, teachers should let students know the principle of detail decides success or failure, these skills and consciousness training needs to be accomplished with a lot of practices.
  4. Conclusion
  Student’s participation is the causation, ability training is the base. The competition guidance should have long-term validity. The goal should not only focus on the grades of the competition, but also how to achieve students’ long-term development. One point should be clear is that few students have the opportunity to participate the competition, colleges should expend the benefited range of scientific and effective competence-based training courses, blend in routine teaching, forming the long-term mechanism. The college should strengthen inter-school exchange and study to promote the overall improvement of oral English teaching in higher vocational colleges.
