People in Britain usually have three main meals a day. They have certain food for meals. British food has traditionally been based on beef, lamb, pork, chicken and fish and generally served with potatoes and one other vegetable. The most common and typical foods eaten in Britain include the sandwich, fish and chips, pies like the cornish pasty, trifle and roasts dinners. The meals nowadays are quite different from traditional English meals because they have changed with the time.
They have breakfast between 7:00 and 9:00. They have lunch between 12:00 and 1:30 p.m. Most people today have a small lunch. They usually have sandwiches, and perhaps some crisps and some fruit for it. They have dinner (sometimes called supper) between 6:30p.m. and 8:00 p.m. That is the main meal of the day. But traditionally, lunch is called dinner, for people eat their main meal at midday.
What is a typical English breakfast? Most people around the world may think a typical English breakfast consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, fried bread, mushrooms with a cup of coffee. However, a typical English breakfast nowadays is more likely to be a bowl of cereals, a slice of toast, orange juice and a cup of coffee. Many people, especially children, in England will eat a bowl of cereal. They are made with different grains such as corn, wheat, oats etc. In winter, many people will eat “porridge” or boiled oats. Meals have become lighter because people are getting busier.
The typical English lunch is very different from the traditional one, for English lunch today is much lighter. But traditionally, people eat dinner at midday, so lunch used to be the dinner. Nowadays, many children at school and adults at work will have a“packed lunch”. This typically consists of a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a piece of fruit and a drink. The“packed lunch” is kept in a plastic box. The favourite sandwich of many young people is prawn and mayonnaise. Sometimes they love to have tuna and mayonnaise , ham and pickle sandwiches. Some people have a simple meal such as cheese and biscuits or soup and bread.
Nowadays, the traditional meal is hardly eaten, except on Sundays. A recent survey showed that most people in Britain eat curry! Rice or pasta dishes are now favoured as the“British Dinner”. Vegetables grown in England, like potatoes, carrots, peas, cabbages and onions, are still very popular.
And what are the traditional English meals like? Of course, now they are quite different from the traditional ones.
The traditional English breakfast is called the“Full English”or“The Full English Fry-up”. The normal dish of a traditional full English breakfast are bacon (traditionally back bacon), poached or fried eggs, fried or grilled tomatoes, fried mushrooms, fried bread or toast with butter and sausages, usually served with a mug of tea. Baked beans and hash browns are also commonly considered an important part of the breakfast. As nearly everything is fried in this meal, the term “fry-up” is quite accurate. Even though not many people will eat this for breakfast today, it is always served in hotels and guest houses around Britain.
Lunch is the meal eaten in the middle of the day (usually between about 12:30 and 2:00). A ploughman’ s lunch is a traditional lunch for farmers in which there is a bread roll, Cheddar cheese, Branston pickle and salad, perhaps with a pork pie. It is also traditional for people to go to a pub with some friends for a pub lunch and a drink.
The traditional British dinner is usually called“tea”, “dinner”or“supper”. A typical British meal for dinner is “meat and two vegetables”. People put hot brown gravy on the meat and usually the vegetables. It is traditionally made from the juices of the roast meat, but now it is more often made from a packet. One of the vegetables is almost always potatoes.
There are several special meals in addition to the main three meals of the day in Britain. One of them is at midday of Sunday. Sunday lunch time is a typical time to eat the traditional Sunday Roast. Traditionally it has roast meat which is cooked in the oven for about two hours, two different kinds of vegetables and potatoes with a Yorkshire pudding. You can always find Yorkshire pudding in a Sunday Roast. It is made from flour, egg and milk. The most common joints are beef, lamb or pork; chicken is also popular. Beef is eaten with hot white horseradish sauce, pork with sweet apple sauce and lamb with green mint sauce.
Another special meal is Afternoon Tea. It is also called the traditional 4 o’clock tea which is a small meal, not a drink. Traditionally it consists of tea or coffee served with either of the following:
1. Freshly baked scones served with cream and jam which is known as a cream tea.
2. Afternoon tea sandwiches which is thinly sliced cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off.
3. Assorted pastries.
Afternoon tea is not common these days because most adults go out to work. However, you can still have afternoon tea at many tea rooms around England.
Afternoon tea became popular about one hundred and fifty years ago, when rich ladies invited their friends to their houses for an afternoon cup of tea. They started offering their visitors sandwiches and cakes too. Soon everyone was enjoying afternoon tea.
They also have a substantial meal called High Tea. It is traditionally called 6 o’ clock tea. The British working population did not have afternoon tea. They had a meal about midday, and a meal after work, between five and seven o’ clock which was called “high tea”or just“tea”.
High tea was a substantial meal that combined delicious sweet foods, such as scones, cakes, buns or tea breads, with tempting savouries, such as cheese on toast, toasted crumpets, cold meats and pickles or poached eggs on toast. This meal is now often replaced with a supper due to people eating their main meal in the evenings rather than at midday.
Traditional British dishes have had competition from other dishes over the years. Many other foods have come into the English meals. But if you visit England, Scotland or Wales, you can still be served with the traditional foods the British have been eating for years.
