NOBEL LAUREATE AWARDED BY UNESCO
Nobel Laureate Tu Youyou was awarded the 2019 UNESCO-Equatorial Guinea International Prize for Research in the Life Sciences by UNESCO on October 22. Tu shared the prize with U.S. doctor Cato Laurencin and professor Kevin McGuigan from Ireland. They won the fi fth edition of the award for their “outstanding scientifi c research projects in the life sciences that have led to an improvement in the quality of human life.” The winners will share a fi nancial award worth $350,000.
Tu, winner of the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2015, “is recognized for her research into parasitic diseases. She discovered an entirely new anti-malarial treatment, artemisinin, which made possible the treatment of thousands of patients in China in the 1980s,” according to UNESCO.
Tu was also among the eight prominent fi gures who received the Medal of the Republic for her outstanding contributions to the country ahead of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
New Occupations
Worker’s Daily October 22
Many new occupations such as taking care of pets and organizing wardrobes have emerged as the labor division becomes increasingly elaborate. Generating greater demands and attracting more industrial insiders in niche markets, newly emerged jobs have mirrored domestic consumption upgrade and industrial transformation.
New occupations refer to those not included in China’s national occupational inventory that are attracting a large number of industrial insiders and requiring professional skills. Some new occupations are generated by technological upgrade, such as online anchors and short video bloggers. Economic progress and the upgrade of people’s consumption concepts have also created new jobs like wardrobe organizers.
After China issued 5G licenses for commercial use earlier in the year, recruitment related to 5G industries has started. E-sports specialists have also been included by the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security into the 13 additions to the national occupational inventory.
However, many people still doubt the social recognition, prospects and guarantee of the new occupations, and misunderstand the working content such as confusing wardrobe organizers with cleaners.
Therefore, more attention should be paid to improve qualifi cation recognition of the new occupations. Related departments also need to provide a favorable environment for innovation and entrepreneurship. Since the emergence of new occupations is in line with domestic industrial restructuring, more time and room for growth is needed for the jobs to mature.
Smart Manufacturing
Outlook Weekly October 21
By connecting industrial production to intelligent technologies, the industrial Internet is making traditional manufacturing smarter. The emergence of the Internet, big data and cloud computing has injected new impetus into the new round of industrial revolution and seen bright prospects.
The industrial Internet can promote industrial restructuring and upgrading, improve resource allocation, create more profits and generate new business forms. Since it provides great opportunities for achieving industrial restructuring, China has placed a focus on the drive and worked jointly with global communities to improve innovation in the industrial Internet.
As the world’s largest manufacturer, the country has continued its efforts to pursue high-quality development and become a manufacturing power. With growing industries and great market demand, it has seen the accelerating development of the industrial Internet in recent years.
However, many industrial Internet platforms are still experiencing the initial phase of development, which features high investment, slow returns and inadequate full-fl edged business modes.
Besides, some enterprises also lack the capability of making innovation and coping with risks. The gap between leading enterprises and those with weak performances has not yet narrowed due to increasingly f ierce competition.
To cope with this, related departments need to develop innovation centers to pool resources from enterprises, universities and research institutes and enhance commercial application of research fi ndings. Efforts are also needed to encourage collaborative innovation, improve management modes and urge leading manufacturing enterprises to cooperate with downstream enterprises to achieve complementary development and improve the eco-system of the industrial Internet.
The rise of 5G technologies with high speed and low latency is expected to shore up the development of the industrial Internet. To further adopt 5G technologies in different industries, targeted plans are needed to promote its layout and launch trials in key fi elds such as car manufacturing and electronic information. As the commercial use of 5G technologies enters a key phase, trans-industrial cooperation needs to be strengthened to integrate 5G and the industrial Internet.
Voucher Traps
People’s Daily October 22
Crab vouchers have become popular among Chinese customers in recent years, suggesting economic progress and consumption upgrade. People prepay for crab vouchers at a lower price, expecting to cash them like rising stocks when picking up crabs from physical or online stores during crab season. However, problems remain because some sellers tend to force up prices and provide more vouchers than goods, which leaves many customers without their goods time and again due to short supply.
Since the over sale of crab vouchers leads sellers to focus less on the quality of goods, farmers raising crabs can also be misled to expanding production blindly and ending up seeing slow sales.
Similar to financial products, crab vouchers are seemingly good gifts but may pose risks when sellers lose credibility and fail to redeem goods. As a result, farmers or consumers may suffer economic losses.
Although vouchers are indeed conducive to the circulation of goods, measures are needed to ensure product supply and a crackdown on fraud. Authorities should improve supervision on e-commerce platforms and regulate the operation of related industries. Consumers also need to keep a clear mind on purchasing vouchers.
AERONAUTICAL PENTATHLON GOLD MEDALIST
Private Liao Weihua won the gold medal in the fl ying contest of the aeronautical pentathlon at the seventh CISM Military World Games on October 19 in Wuhan, central China’s Hubei Province.
In the flying contest, officially known as low-level triangular navigation, participants compete as navigators and give orders to partner pilots to fly about 40 minutes on a triangular route. They are scored from three checkpoints to test their navigational accuracy and whether they reach the points on time. The competition also includes shooting, fencing, swimming, basketball, an obstacle run and orienteering.
Liao had been training for the competition since the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Bayi team of aeronautical pentathlon was set up in 2015. This year was the team’s fi rst time in the military games.
The 27-year-old Liao comes from a village in Shaoguan City of south China’s Guangdong Province and was admitted to the National University of Defense Technology in 2011. He now serves in the PLA Air Force. “China is taking initiatives which give hope to people from different countries.
