The portrait of Dorian Gray is the only novel by Oscar Wilde. After it came out, many contemporary critics harshly criticized it. It is generally considered an unethical piece of work. Some people even call it poisonous, but many critics think it has moral connotations. In recent years, with the deepening of the study of Wilde, as the author’s shadow desalinates in the novel, it is imperative to reread it. This article uses post-structuralist rhetoric and intertextual reading strategies to read the “Portrait of Dorian Gray” from the symbolism of the novel, Wilde’s concept of truth, self-concept and the concept of masks to reveal the complexity of the novel’s meaning.
