藏族是一个强悍尚武、有着悠久历史及文化传统的民族。随身佩刀是千百年来藏人的风俗,藏族长刀不仅是重要的兵器,也是个人身份和阶层的标志。公元7世纪文成公主入藏时,陪嫁了珍宝典籍300种、营造与工技著作60种,并有大量工匠作为嫁妆,其中即包括冶炼师和刀剑工匠。这些工匠带来的先进技术对吐蕃冷兵器制造业发展起了很大作用。
