The United States consists of two major mountain ranges: the Appalachian Mountains in the east and the Greater Rockies in the Cordillera Mountains in the west. Small towns, associated with the mining of minerals or coal, used to be located in different regions of every mountain range. As the world’s demand for copper mines and coal dropped significantly, residents left the towns and their economic viability collapsed. What has been left behind is some of the most unique forms of towns in the United States, and its ingenious ways of adapting to terrain and transportation networks deserve detailed study.
