Florence Nightingale was born in a rich family. When she was young she took lessons in music and drawing, and read great books. She also traveled a great deal with her mother and father.
As a child she felt that visiting sick people was both a duty and a pleasure. She enjoyed helping them.
At last her mind was made up. “I’m going to be a nurse,” she decided. “Nursing isn’t the right work for a lady,” her father told her.
“Then I will make it so,”she smiled. And she went to learn nursing in Germany and France. When she returned to England, Florence started a nursing home for women.
During the Crimean War in 1854 she went with a group of thirty-eight nurses to the front hospitals. What they saw there was terrible. Dirt and death were everywhere to be seen and smelled. The officer there did not want any woman to tell him how to run a hospital, either. But the brave nurses went to work.
Florence used her own money and some from friends to buy clothes, beds, medicine and food for the men. Her only pay was in smiles from the lips of dying soldiers. But they were more than enough for this kind woman.
After war she returned to England and was honoured(给……荣誉) for her services by Queen Victoria. But Florence said that her work had just begun. She raised money to build the Nightingale Home for Nurses in London. She also wrote a book on public health, which was printed in several countries.
Florence Nightingale died at the age of ninety, still trying to serve others through her work as a nurse. Indeed, it is because of her that we honor nurses today.

The human nose has given to the languages of the world many interesting expressions. Of course, this is not surprising. Without the nose, we could not breathe or smell. It is the part of the face that gives a person special character. Cyranode Bergerac said that a large nose showed a great man—courageous, courteous, manly and intellectual.
A famous woman poet wished that she had two noses to smell a rose! Blaise Pascal, a French philosopher, made an interesting comment about Cleopatra’s(克利欧佩特拉(古埃及艳后)) nose. If it had been shorter, he said, it would have changed the whole face of the world!
Historically, man’s nose has had a principal role in his imagination. Man has referred to the nose in many ways to express his emotions. Expressions concering the nose refer to human weakness:anger, pride, jealousy and revenge.
In English there are a number of phrases about the nose. For example, to hold up one’s nose, expresses a basic human feeling—pride. People can hold up their noses at people, things and places.
The phrase, to be led around by the nose, shows man’s weakness. A person who is led around by the nose lets other people control him. On the other hand, person who follows his nose lets his instinct guide him.
For the human emotion of rejection, the phrase, to have one’s nose put out of joint, is very descriptive. The expression applies to person who have been turned aside because of a competitor. Their pride is hurt and they feel rejected. This expression is not new. It was used by Erasmus in 1542.
This is only a sampling of expressions in English dealing with the nose. There are number of others. However, it should be as plain as the nose on your face that the nose is more than organ for breathing and smelling!
67. The underlined phrase in the 4th paragraph shows________.

A. is easy to get angry
B. is strong-minded

D. is very emotional
69. A person who has nose put out of joint feels________.
A. hurt and unaccepted
B. pleased
C. ill
D. proud and happy
70. What does the last sentence of this passage mean?
A. The nose is really just an organ for breathing and smelling.
B. It is very hard to know that the nose is not only for smelling.
C. It is very obvious that the nose’s function is more than breathing and smelling.
D. It is strange that nose has other functions except these two.

Most of us feel upset if we miss just one meal, and if we tried to go without food for 12 hours we would really be uncomfortable. But there are some people who seem able to “fast” for very long period.
We have various records for long fast, but in most cases there is no medical proof and so the records are doubtful. One South African woman once said that she lived for 102 days on nothing but water and soda water.
There are great differences among living things in the ability to survive without food. For example, a tick(扁虫), which lives on animals, may survive a whole year. Warm-blooded animals use up their stores of food in the body more quickly. In fact, the smaller and more active the animal, the more quickly it uses up its reserves(储存). A small bird dies from hunger in about five days, a dog in about twenty. In general, we can say that a warm-blooded animal will die when it has lost about half its normal weight.
This matter of weight is important. Man and other animals live in a state keeping up the body weight once a certain point has been reached. This regulation(调节) of body weight is done by thirst, hunger, and appetite.
When your blood lacks nutritional(营养) materials, this announces the hunger center of the brain and you feel “hungry”. The body is crying out for any kind of fuel (food). And it is our appetite that sees to it that we choose a mixed diet, which is the kind the body needs.
71. According to this passage, a man will die________.
A. when a certain point in losing weight has been reached
B. when his blood lacks nutritional materials
C. when half of his normal weight is lost
D. when he goes without food for more than 12 hours
72. The word “fast” in paragraph 1 can best be replaced by “________”.
A. eat no food
B. live only on water and soda water
C. live on nothing
D. remain alive for a long time without food
73. A tick can survive much longer than a bird because________.
A. a tick lives on animals
B. a tick is much smaller
C. a bird is more active
D. a tick is much smaller and a bird is more active
74. A person feels hungry________.
A. if he doesn’t choose a mixed diet
B. because his body cries out for food
C. when something is wrong with the regulation of body weight
D. if there are not enough nutritional materials in his blood
75. From the passage we can infer that the author________.
A. believes the South African woman very firmly
B. does not believe the South African woman at all
C. is not certain whether the South African woman’s words were true
D. is doubtful whether there was such a South African woman

A. a tick lives on animals
B. a tick is much smaller
C. a bird is more active
D. a tick is much smaller and a bird is more active
74. A person feels hungry________.
A. if he doesn’t choose a mixed diet
B. because his body cries out for food
C. when something is wrong with the regulation of body weight
D. if there are not enough nutritional materials in his blood
