形成在我国西汉时期东北地区的高句骊族，主要来源于貊族东迁的后裔高夷、夫余、沃沮、小水貊、等。首先使用高句骊称号的是高夷人，构成高句骊族主体的是夫余人；在高句骊族发展壮大过程中，沃沮、小水貊、等先后被兼并，与高句骊凝聚为一族。同时，在高句骊崛起后，也有非貊族系的古代朝鲜人后裔、汉、鲜卑、肃慎、契丹、百济等族人，被其俘掠或投奔、陷没后融入高句骊族，前三种人人数众多。高句骊族在解体、消失过程中，凡１５万户约七八十万人流向有四：迁居中原各地近３０万人，投入新罗约１０万人，亡归鞘（渤海）的１０万人以上，散入突厥万余人，共５０余万人。其余２０余万人，多半死于战乱，余散居在辽河以东、渤海国以南、大同江以北地区。
