清代苏州人顾禄,字铁卿,著《桐桥倚棹录》,是一部记述苏州山塘虎丘一带山水、名胜、市廛、手工艺等的专著。其中市廛卷中介绍船菜、酒楼、菜谱等,反映了吴地当时餐饮业的繁荣景象。在历史长河中有关苏州菜点的记载颇多,有的在杂记中、有的在游记里、有的在诗词内,有关文献、史料、地方志等亦有许多出处,成篇记载不多,大多也只字片语,在这许多历史典籍中唯独《桐桥倚棹录》记载苏州菜点最多,也最全面,包括冷菜、热菜、点心、汤羹仅有
