从远古开始,人类就经常凝视天空中的飞鸟,做着关于“飞翔”的梦。几千年过去了,人类从来没有放弃对这个梦想的追逐。在中国,传说有鲁班制作的木鸢,能飞行几千里而不落;在西方,热气球则是非常重要的发明,是现代飞行器的鼻祖。流传至今,它已成为一项体育休闲运动,受到世界各地人们的喜爱。在懦勒·凡尔纳著名科幻小说《环游地球八十天》中,塑造了一位充满冒险精神的英国绅士形象,他把热气球当作交通工具,跨越千山万水,环游世界。虽然小说中没有对热气球的飞行原理进行详细描写,但凡尔纳无疑是最早幻想利用热气球实现飞行梦想的人之一。
