In recent years, studies have noted that the number of Ag-positive proximal centromeres and their association frequency decrease with the years. In this paper, we investigated the combination of Ag-positive nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) and silver-staining near-centromeric chromosomes in cultured human lymphocytes. The number of Ag-positive NORs and chromosomal association was found to be reduced at age 80 and over. Chronic 13th and 21st chromosome numbers and the combined frequency of chromosomes 13 and 22 decreased with age. Human proximal centromeric chromosomes contain genes encoding 18S and 28S ribosomal RNA. Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs)
