The commencement of the first phase of Yangshan Deepwater Port marks a substantial step taken by Shanghai toward the goal of an international shipping center. In 2002, Shanghai’s container throughput reached 8.613 million TEU, up 35% annually, showing tremendous potential for growth and surpassing Kaohsiung Port in Taiwan to become the fourth largest container port in the world. With the continuous economic development in the hinterland and the further concentration of manufacturing industries in and around Shanghai, container throughput in Shanghai will surely continue to increase. At the same time, the contradiction between the heavy task of collecting and distributing goods and the incomplete integrated transportation system will also become increasingly prominent.
