How should the world coal industry look at the ongoing privatization process of the UK State Coal Industry Corporation? The general view seems to be very cautious. No one, even the British government, can tell how to handle this process. On the surface, this prospect is most likely. Since the coal miners’ strike in 1984-1985, they have been trapped in an almost continuous crisis. Production has fallen by 15% to 15 million tons, 82 mines have been closed, accounting for 62% of the total, and the number of employed people has fallen to 120,000. It accounted for 68% of the total number of original workers. Although labor productivity has been increasing, it only reached 5.31 tons/person in 1991-1992. Measured on an international level, British coal companies have become serious and inefficient
