Alveolar macrophages (AM) play an important role in maintaining the homeostasis of the lung immune system and host defense. Alveolar macrophages derived from embryonic mononuclear cells are self-renewal dependent on the regulation of the granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) signaling pathway. Under physiological conditions, alveolar macrophages maintain tissue homeostasis as sentinels. Under inflammatory conditions, alveolar macrophages can be replenished by bone marrow-derived hematopoietic stem cells and can be involved in the regulation of the inflammatory response. Alveolar macrophages play an important role in some lung diseases. This article reviews the research progress of the origin, development and function of alveolar macrophages and their roles in some pulmonary diseases.
