Earlier this year, the Merrill Lynch Forum discussed with Francis Fukuyama on globalization. This talk focused on how culture, the world’s growing economic integration, shapes the culture and how much culture is being shaped. In his comments, Fukuyama challenged the notion that globalization is leading to cultural homogeneity, arguing that while society, despite its economic pressures, still maintains its unique characteristics. In fact, Fukuyama insisted that this cultural value is limited in many ways and how the business operates within a country. This does not mean that society is not affected or changed by the process of globalization - Fukuyama believes that there is a convergence of political thinking and economic thinking. More precisely, he believes that deeper cultural factors are not easily discarded.
