According to the latest article in the Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment magazine, although shale gas production in the United States has increased seven-fold since 2007, scientists are not yet fully aware of the natural and wildlife impacts of the industry. Eight biologists from different agencies and organizations believe that determining the environmental impact of natural gas extraction, including chemical contamination, casing failures and other accidents, is of paramount importance. The researchers found that there is a “knowledge gap” in the direct and quantitative evidence of the impact of shale gas operations on the natural world.
