The Canadian Government recently promulgated the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and its accompanying Regulations, which set forth some new requirements for the maintenance of the status of Canadian permanent residents. These new rules have completely changed the original Immigration Law’s provision on the status of permanent residents. Judging from these provisions, the new provisions will have an extremely serious impact on many of the newcomer families in Canada who are currently staying abroad. Many families may therefore have to rearrange their own lives for the coming years. Some permanent residents will lose their permanent Canadian identity forever.
